Green School at Astechnova Energy Conference

Project Operation Rain or Shine (OROS)the biggest renewable energy project at Green School Bali to date, has spread its wings beyond the school’s jungle campus and is sending a message of sustainable energy to the world. The project, which is funded by the Zayed Future Energy Prize, has become a truly community-based project and I’m honored to be part of the team. We have been working hard to build collaborations and partnerships with various sustainable energy stakeholders, companies, academics, sustainable entrepreneurs and more.

On November 1-2, 2017, I had the opportunity to share the innovative project at the Astechnova International Energy Conference 2017 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. People from all over the world participated in this prestigious conference to present their research and discuss the Innovative Sustainable System of Energy – Water – Food (E-W-F) nexus. Among others, there were researchers, practitioners, and academia from the USA, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Netherlands, South Korea, United Arab Emirates and my home country, Indonesia.

I had a great opportunity to work on Operation Rain or Shine as the technical architect for the last year. I was able to bring my learning to life, while researching for my thesis to accomplish my degree in Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics from Faculty of Engineering, Gadjah Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. My focus was working on the power monitoring system of Green School, using the microprocessor, sensors, and Internet of Things (IoT). Being part of the team has allowed me to work on the energy audit, renewable energy system improvement, instrumentation, energy monitoring system and most fun of all, the student projects related to Operation Rain or Shine.

At the international conference, I presented my research paper about the design and development of a real-time power monitoring system based on Internet of Things for the sustainable energy management system implementation at Green School, Bali. The final paper will also be published in Scopus International Journal. I demonstrated how this real-life project integrates technologies and natural sources to create the sustainable energy solution for the Green School.

Today, the population is growing rapidly and the economy remains unstable, securing the needs of energy, water, and food is a major problem. Operation Rain or Shine is a great example of a local, innovative, sustainable energy solution to tackle the world’s energy problem.

While working in Green School’s project, I gained so much knowledge, experience, and technical expertise, but I learned how sustainable solutions can be initiated by students and involves a whole community. This community-based team not only aspires to get the final solution off the ground and running but also to facilitate ongoing learning on renewable energy. Throughout the project, multiple ideas and knowledge have been gathered from students, teachers, parents, and staff, along with practical design and construction for anyone keen to get hands-on!

As an instrumentation engineer student, I have had the opportunity to play a hands-on role to create a smart device to measure the energy at Green School and to display it on a monitoring website, as my thesis project. I also took this idea into the classrooms and collaborated with students and teachers who run the Smart Technology Class.

My energy is now directed onto developing an energy monitoring system for the School’s grid consumption. If you want to see the real-time and historical data of our grid consumption, you can go to this page, the username is “Greenschool” and the password is “greenschoolbali”

The Astechnova Energy Conference was an important event to showcase the student-led sustainable energy project and how we can measure the energy throughout the school towards a more sustainable world. I can clearly see how the Green School community is leveraging technology advancements to create more sustainable energy solutions. I was humbled to bring the voice of the Green School community and to share our sustainable innovation as inspiration to others on making our world more sustainable.
