Green School Weekly News

Thank you to all parents who attended our very first Aquaponic workshop. The introductory session went really well as we learned a fantastic way to implement a sustainable garden concept.

A presentation led by Peter Barge, Green School parent and board member, taught us that plants and fish can naturally support each other. As plants need light, water, and nutrients to grow, the fish need food, clean water, and oxygen. Plants take in carbon dioxide for photosynthesis and produce oxygen. In the Aquaponic system, fish consume sugars and breathe in oxygen from plants while producing carbon dioxide; all happens in a cycle.

This system gives quite a lot of benefits including less labour needed, higher yields through a natural process, lower waste as all byproducts are reused, and reduction in carbon footprint among others.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the workshop and are interested to start their own Aquaponic system. Don't miss out on our workshops next semester!
