Curriculum: High School: Grades 9 – 11

Upper Secondary

High School

The senior school program offers students a secure academic program guided by the Cambridge outcomes, while giving students a degree of autonomy in carving their own path to personal growth.

On Campus course work:

By using the Cambridge learning outcomes you can be confident that your student will have the skills and content knowledge to succeed in whatever path their life takes.  However there are a number of things that differentiate our program from other schools following the Cambridge system.  First is our commitment to include continual links to the green curriculum, weaving pressing environmental issues into each course at every opportunity. We then ask students to apply the content they are learning across the curriculum to address these complex issues, empowering them to contribute to a sustainable future.  A second component that separates our program from others is our hands on approach to learning.  That is not to say that more traditional teaching methods have no place in our classrooms, it is rather to say that we believe that students learn more and retain information longer if they live the learning process.  In that way Bali becomes our classroom and we are not confined to the traditional teaching environment. Many of the courses—IGCSE’s Global Perspectives, Green School’s Green Enterprise, and A level course offerings are designed with the expectation that students are ready to begin taking more responsibility for their learning, and that they will develop the skills of self-reliance and collaboration to a high degree. (For more details about IGSCE, AS and A Level courses offered through Cambridge International Exams, please see: http://www.cie.org.uk/qualifications/academic/middlesec/igcse/subjects, http://www.cie.org.uk/qualifications/academic/uppersec/index_html )

Online and self-directed course work:

This year, course offerings have been expanded through the use of a guided self-study option, and online courses through Aventa Learning.  Aventa Learning provides our students with a variety of additional offerings that would not otherwise be available at Green School. These offerings allow students to build upon their personal passions such as web design, digital video production, or foreign language studies.  Aventa courses are accessed online and monitored by Green School teachers. Formal assessments are built into Aventa Learning courses.  Self-directed studies are supported by Green School staff, and assessment is based upon a portfolio of work.[;

High school portfolio project:

As a graduation requirement each Green School High School student will design and create an online portfolio, showcasing a variety of personal achievements and talents.  It is intended to be a personalized summary of each student’s time at Green School.  Each portfolio will be individual, reflecting students’ personalities and talents. Under the guidance of teachers and mentors, senior school students will dedicate time each week for updating and designing their portfolios.  Students’ progress will be monitored and assessed regularly, and the living portfolio will be evaluated using a set of assessment criteria developed by the school team.

The long term Goal:

The long term plan for the high school is to take the best practices developed over the past four years at Green School, in combination with the talents of our current staff, to grow a high school curriculum that is unique to Green School and better suited to meet the Green School vision.
