Green School launches worldwide search for a new Director

Beginning as soon as possible during the 2010-11 school year
but no later than August 2011

This is not a typical announcement for a Director Search, because Green School is not a typical school. We seek a precise fit. We work to develop a highly innovative new paradigm in education that breaks with traditional educational and architectural models. Following the contractual end of the very successful two-year Founding Directorship of Ronald Stones, O.B.E., we seek a new Director deeply committed to the education and development of new leaders in a world full of environmental and social uncertainty.

The School’s Purpose

Green School was established in 2007, driven by the vision and energy of John  and Cynthia Hardy, the school’s founders, in response to the need for an education revolution. The school is firmly rooted in:

  • The Green Movement to develop a sustainable world environment
  • Creating World leaders prepared to found healthy and sustainable world social systems
  • Fostering student appreciation for the arts, human physical abilities, nature, beauty, integrity
  • Promoting personal responsibility.

At the same time, the school’s curriculum addresses the essentials in children’s education as it focuses on Green solutions for the planet and cultivates sustainable entrepreneurial skills and the exploration of human potential.

Campus and Community

Green School’s eight hectares straddling Bali’s Ayung River facilitate the integration of  Bali’s unique land and culture into the school’s hands-on curricula. The campus is constructed using sustainable materials, and is a showcase of stunning Green architectural innovation.

Students

The school’s student body – currently over 150 students in grades pre kg to grade 10 -  is 80% western and 20% Asian students, with a scholarship program available to Balinese applicants. The courses, taught traditionally, on-line, and through assistance from visiting scholars, guide students ultimately toward university and other post-secondary programs.

Faculty

Teachers at Green School are an exceptional group of people committed to living full and balanced lives. Teachers do more than teach at Green School – they live their dreams. They give back to the community. They are good mentors for the children.

The Challenge

The Director position at Green School affords an opportunity for the right candidate to truly make a difference in education. He/she will have the opportunity to participate as a leader in creating and implementing a world-class, local, green curriculum.

The Green School Edge

Green School edge is not yet well defined. The founders expect the new Director to help define this edge, and build the school with them. They need help and direction, beginning in year three of the school’s existence, to develop strong new pillars to support the school’s maturing ethos as it develops whilst – crucially – consolidating our operational and financial foundations.

Our school is much more than a school. We seek an educational leader who will take the reins, expanding and developing all aspects of the school’s work. This will require commitment to and enthusiasm for pushing forward our Green Studies programme, in which social entrepreneurship – Green Enterprise – is a pivotal strand, enabling students to take part in the local food cycle and economy. Students are actively involved in helping convert local farmers to organic farming methods. Green School also runs on its campus an environmental education camp with the purpose of funding the scholarship programme for Balinese students. Our new Director will embrace, champion and nourish holistic green education that is our hallmark and our banner.

The Candidate We Seek

We are seeking a school leadership candidate with the bravery to do the new and the unexpected, who is grounded in educational understanding: one who knows how to use successes from the past and reinvent them for new generations with an understanding of the world’s increasingly unique environmental, social and educational needs.

This person must improve income and expenditures management, and will need to take responsibility for the bottom line, by applying sound business sense. The successful candidate will:

  • Demonstrate commitment to a holistic philosophy, and want to help create a holistic school.
  • Embrace learning differences by promoting in students true personal development, rather than fixing the learner so as to be able to jump thru conventional testing hoops – understanding multisensory approaches to enabling students with prolexia (our term for dyslexia) to flourish.
  • View online learning in a school setting as a viable part of the future of education.
  • Thrive in the hot and humid, Green School’s classrooms are open to the environment.
  • Be young at heart but experienced and idealistic, yet practical.
  • Rise to the challenges of changing a school for the better.
  • Be able to recognize when a change does not work and unafraid to keep going back to the drawing board.
  • Be entrepreneurial, thriving in a start up situation.
  • Be physically fit, non-smoking and of sober habits.
  • Understand the brand of Green School how to grow it.
  • Have significant prior school administrative/leadership experience as a school Principal or Director, if possible in a start-up school.
  • Want to make evident the Green School difference, growing our little seedling into a full and successful crop.
