When I coached interscholastic sports, I asked my athletes to eat and sleep right, get in great shape, and put the needs of the team first. I told them to make this decision one time, not to get up every day and decide what to do. For once the decision is made, the path is set and the remainder of the journey becomes relatively easy.
Here at Green School, we have also made certain key decisions once: be a school that walks the talk of truly green education; have the best possible faculty and student body; create the most inspiring architecture and campus; develop a curriculum that will enable the next generation to solve the most complex of questions in human history. Everything we do is informed by these principles and they are reflected in our practices every day.
In this issue of the Notes from the Field, we are focusing on how we have achieved each of these four elements that will make Green School a huge success not just today, but for the future. As the Chinese proverb said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. I encourage you to read this newsletter to see just what an incredible first step we have taken here at Green School.

Balance is a word that may sometimes be underestimated in the western world, particularly in our modern times as we rush headlong down our rocky road. However, this word as unbalanced as it may look itself (I have often tried spelling it with two ells at least…), is a key to our proposed education and curriculum at Green School
On August 11, Green School hosted 76 members of the Atlantis Foundation, a German organization promoting world peace that is led by Peter Voss. Like Green School, Peter and his students believe that developing a new paradigm in education is essential for a more sustainable planet. The group treated Green School staff to a performance of songs from different spiritual traditions from around the world before embarking on a campus tour, highlighted by a tree-planting ceremony honoring the Atlantis Foundation’s gift of 76 fruit trees to the campus.
Here We Grow Again
We want to create a sustainable, beautiful, and livable school. We do this by paying careful attention to our materials and methods of construction. We begin with sustainable, locally available materials like bamboo, grass, and stone. But we are not only interested in green materials--we also love beauty and innovation. The shapes of our buildings are deeply influenced by the physical characteristics of what we use to construct them.
With bamboo, we push the boundaries of this lightweight, flexible material to create curved, arching structures, and high, airy spaces. The result is an inspiring place to live and learn.

“Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.”
Ben is excited to welcome students from 16 countries around the world to Green School in September. It’s a diverse group, but one trait that all of these children (and their parents) share is a desire to push the boundaries of conventional thought and a willingness to engage in a new conversation about what education can look like. These are people who realize that the current modes of human interaction with the planet are unsustainable and who want to participate in the search for new alternatives. In addition, they have a pioneering spirit that allows for a bit of risk-taking and a plunge into the unknown, backed by the confidence that there may be a few bumps in the road along the way but that our ultimate destination is a spectacular one!
Green School was delighted to welcome Peter Seligmann, Chairman and CEO of Conservation International, who has created lasting solutions to biodiversity and sustainable development challenges for more than 25 years. At the end of a pleasant Sunday stroll around Green School’s eight-hectare campus, he left us with these words, “I applaud the aspiration of the Green School to create an educational experience that is built upon respect for Balinese culture as well as sustainability of nature. The world needs your inspiration and ingenuity”.
A group of 25 students and faculty from United World College in Singapore visited Green School on June 28 to learn about our environmental initiatives and innovative curriculum.
Grow with Us
Giving back to Bali
Green School is proud to demonstrate its support of Bali’s youth by offering a generous scholarship program for local children. We will offer more than a dozen scholarships in its first year. This will enable Bali’s brightest, most creative, and most engaged students the chance to receive a world-class education for a minimal cost. We are now actively seeking scholarship students and sponsors for this program.
Help Us Build the Heart of School
Our most ambitious building project is called Heart of School. The three interconnected spirals that encompass the building will stand over 20 meters high. It will be Bali’s largest bamboo structure and quite likely it’s most beautiful as well. Heart of School will house our library, computer room, meeting spaces, exhibition halls, offices, and much more. The foundation is dug and we are about to start building upwards.
Now is your chance to literally help us build Heart of School. Heart of School’s design calls for 2,630 bamboo poles and we are inviting our friends to contribute a pole to this project. Dozens of visitors to Green School have already donated bamboo and we have marked each gift by carving the donor’s name on the pole.
Among the many things we’re doing differently here at Green School is the way we’re constructing the roads that connect the various parts of our campus. Instead of using asphalt, with its heavy carbon footprint, we’re combining volcanic rocks from Bali, sand, and local labor and know-how to build roads that are entirely free of petrochemicals or petrochemical-based cement products. In addition to the significant environmental advantages, these roads perform extremely well during the rainy season and cost much less to produce than traditional asphalt roads. Greener doesn’t always mean more expensive or less functionality!
