15. Our own weekly news
A few months ago in these pages we reported on the Harrison family’s attempts to help organize environmental activities in the village where they live. Kimberly Harrison sent us the following update this week. Wow!
Just sending along a photo taken yesterday if our village garbage clean up program action, Bumi Lestari We had over 1000 villagers out cleaning the rivers and streams. It has been eight months since we started this and the results so far have been phenomenal.
Over 1000 villagers gathered Sunday morning in Desa Pererenan, to remove the plastic and rubbish from their waterways. This village is taking a stand against garbage and pollution, enacting laws, posting penalty signs, cleaning and restocking rivers with fish and shrimp. Fishing along the tributaries is a favorite Balinese pastime; stocks are threatened, or gone in most of South Bali’s rivers. This village’s ongoing conservation program initiated by a Green School family and supported by the villagers, is turning back the hands of time and reclaiming their beaches and riverbanks.
The majority of the 150 tons of waste produced on Bali each day come directly, or indirectly from tourism.
High School Parents meeting: Wednesday, 30 May, 3:30-4:30 PM
Dear High School Parents:
Next Wednesday, 30st of May from 3:30-4:30 (Mepantigan), the High School Team would like to invite you to a meeting to unveil the courses and programs for next year. We have been working non-stop to create a program that fits the original vision of Green School and embraces each child’s post-graduation life’s choices equally and allows them to explore their passions fully. At this meeting, we will present the overview, provide some specific examples of courses, and we will talk about the field trips and overseas trip that we have planned.
Please RSVP to our High School Coordinator Leslie at firstname.lastname@example.org. Feel free to email her with any questions as well.
Grade 5 Eggs for Sale!
I am happy to announce that starting next Friday, June 1st, 5th grade will begin officially selling their local, farm fresh, cage free, organic eggs to the greater Green School community! As you may or may not know, Grade 5 has been “in charge” of the chickens this year and have spent countless hours designing and implementing habitat improvements, learning all about chicken needs, life cycle, natural habitat, typical behaviors, and of course, practicing how to be good chicken farmers! In addition, part of their daily “chicken checker duty” includes collecting fresh eggs! Now that our chickens are producing a consistent surplus of high quality, delicious eggs we are ready to share them with all of you!
Starting Friday June 1st, and every Friday thereafter, you are welcome to purchase these eggs (maximum 12 eggs per purchase) at the Green Warung starting after school at 3:15pm on a first come first serve basis. Members of Grade 5 will be on hand to assist Ibu Kadek and team and to collect information about egg demand at Green School. For the time being eggs will be sold for 2,000rp per egg. Remember that with your purchase you are supporting local organic farmers! In addition, because the eggs are literally walked from the “farm” to the “store” there is no carbon footprint involved! Yay!
See you on Friday!

Thanks from the new Living Food Lab!
The Living Food Lab team wanted to pop in and give a huge thanks to the students, staff and parents for the great reception during our first three weeks! Also for your patience as we work to keep food in stock!
The final adjustments are being made to our whole food bar, which should be operating fully by mid-next week. In the meantime, we now have salads of the day and a variety of extracted juices, so come on over and see what’s on!
Anything you would like to see? Let us know on our FB page at www.facebook.com/livingfoodlab
Avara, Ketut, Komang, Gilbert and Steve
PS Take home family salads coming shortly…please get in touch if interested.
Hubud is entering the final week of its popup, so grab your laptop and drop by and get your stuff done in the most productive place in town! We are open from 8-6 each day, and later when we have a night event.
Location–We have taken over Cafe Kendi on Jl Bisma, which is 400m from the main road on the right side. Look for the large black “H”.
Facilities–great distinct work spaces, from private tables, bean bag nooks and, for a bit of elbow rubbing, our fantastic mother table! (Thanks Jason Lamberth!)
Internet–You bet…fastest in town. Come in and give skype a test drive
Norishment: Cafe Kendi has a great, recently revamped menu and we provide free Freak coffee, drinking water and teas
Beyond the coworking opportunity, here is our schedule of events for this week:
9-12: Nailing the Plan: Two resource people on hand to take a look at your current business plan or help you get started forming one. Drop in for some 1 on 1 time. (Pls let us know if you plan to attend)
7-830: Idea Bar: It’s like idea speed dating–get paired bp for two minutes to tell someone your idea/business/project and here theirs. By the end you will have perfected your ‘pitch’, found out about some amazing projects around Bali and possibly met a collaborator!
Tuesday’s are Crank Day at Hubud–come in, write your To Do list on our blackboard and get cranking! You won’t believe how productive you can be! No events are scheduled, and we enter FB/Twitter silence as we get busy.
9-12: World Cafe CALLING ALL (POTENTIAL) HUBSTERS: Part of our motivation for hosting the popup was to get feedback from the communities on what the ultimate coworking s[pace would look and feel like. This will be a really cool and interactive feedback exercise to help us all co-create the most amazing workspace ever. It will be fun, dynamic and, best of all, facilitated by Renee Martyna, Conversation Curator and Hubud veteran.
7-9: PechaKucha: An amazing presentation format where a speaker presents 20 slides of 20 seconds each...a visual, punchy way to learn and spark incredible conversation. The lineup is nailed down and will be shared via flyer...you don't want to miss it.
630-11pm: Pop-Down Party: Come help us celebrate and wind down a great two weeks! Drinks, good music and great company.
Remember, during and around these events the workspace is open for casual drop in coworking. Try it out!
To RSVP for any of the events, and/or to be added to our mailing list, pls email firstname.lastname@example.org.
